Audi Q5: Brake Pads, Removing and Installing, Brake 1LV and 1ZK, SQ5

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  • Torque Wrench 1332 40-200Nm -VAG1332 -
  • Piston Resetting Tool -T10145-
  • Socket - Xzn 9 -T50036 -

  Note

If old brake pads are being replaced with new ones, then it is necessary to check the brake rotor for wear. Pay attention to the brake rotor wear limit while doing this.

Removing

  Note

When removing, mark brake pads that will be used again. Install in the same position, otherwise braking effect will be uneven.

- Remove affected wheel. Refer to →Wheel and Tire Guide; Rep. Gr.44.

- Disconnect the connector for the brake pad wear display -arrow-.

- Release the connector from the mount while turning it 90º at the same time.

- Remove the connector from the bracket.

- Unhook brake line from retainer

- Remove the screw -8- for the balance spring and cover.

  Note

Spring is tensioned, protect with a glove or cloth.

- Remove the balance spring -10- and cover -9-.

- Remove the caps -17-.

  Note

Remove the guide pin -16- and the 9 mm Allen Screw Socket - XZN 9 -T50036-.

- Remove the guide pin -16- from the brake caliper.

- Carefully remove the brake caliper -7- with brake pads from the brake rotor.

  Caution

  • Do not let the brake caliper with the brake carrier hang on the brake hose. Do not support the weight with the brake hose.
  • Replace the brake hose if damaged.
  • Do not press the brake pedal when the caliper is removed.

- Remove the outer brake pad from the brake caliper.

- Remove the inner brake pad and the wire for the brake pad wear display from the brake caliper. When doing this, push the wire through the brake caliper.

Installing

If old brake pads are being replaced with new ones, then it is necessary to check the brake rotor for wear. Pay attention to the brake rotor wear limit while doing this.

- Check brake rotor. Refer to → Chapter "Front Brakes".

  Note

  • Always replace brake pads on the same axle at the same time.
  • Install complete repair kit. Refer to Parts Catalog.
  • Install on one axle on brake pads from the same manufacturer and with the same quality.
  • Use only mineral spirits or commercially available brake cleaner to clean the brake caliper.

- Clean brake caliper.

  Caution

Danger of contamination and paint damage from escaping brake fluid.

  • If the brake pads are worn out and brake fluid is filled, the brake fluid may overflow if the pistons in the brake cylinder are pressed back.
  • Check the brake fluid level before pressing back the pistons. If there is brake fluid up to the "MAX" mark, some brake fluid will need to be extracted.
  • Use the Brake Charger/Bleeder Unit -VAS5234- to extract brake fluid from brake fluid reservoir.

- Use the Piston Resetting Tool -T10145- to press the brake piston completely into the brake caliper.

- Remove any film on the back of the pad before installing.

- Install the clip for the brake pad wear display into the inner brake pad.

- Install contact -arrow-.

  Note

Make sure the contact for the brake pad wear display fits correctly in the clip inside the inner brake pad.

- Install the inner brake pad and the wire for the brake pad wear display in the brake caliper. When doing this, push the wire through the brake caliper.

- Install the outer brake pad -2- in the brake caliper.

- Slide the brake caliper with the brake pads installed over the brake rotor.

Make sure the brake hose is routed correctly. Make sure the brake hose is not blocked, bent or rubbing against the vehicle.

- Push the guide pin -16- through the brake caliper.

  Note

  • Make sure the seals for the guide pins are not damaged.
  • Make sure the seal is correctly installed.

- Tighten brake caliper to brake carrier using both guide pins.

- Install both caps -17-.

  Note

Make sure the brake hose is not twisted.

- Install the balance spring -10- and cover -9- in the brake caliper housing.

- Install and tighten the bolt -8-.

  Note

  • Make sure the cover and balance spring are installed correctly.
  • The tips of the balance spring fit into the brake caliper.
  • The tip of the balance spring fits under the cover.

- Install the brake line in the bracket.

- Connect wear indicator connector.

- Install the electrical connection for the brake pad wear display in the bracket.

- Mount the wheels.

- Check brake fluid level, and fill if necessary.

  WARNING

There is the risk of an accident.

  • Before moving the vehicle, press the brake pedal firmly several times to seat the brake pads correctly in their operating position.
  • Make sure the brakes are working correctly before driving the vehicle.
